  • Assignment#3 – Question 4

    4. For question #2, what did you do differently from the original post? Please outline, explain and justify what you changed & why. Essentially, what did you learn from this new topic and what did you change and why. (8 Marks)

In the revised version of the introductory post, several changes were made to improve clarity, usability, and organisation. The original version contained longer sentences and less structured content, which made it harder for readers to quickly understand the message. The revised version focuses on presenting in a clever and more organized way.

One major change was the use of headings and bullet points to seperate information into smaller sections.. This adjustment helped make the content easiest to scan and understand. Breaking information into shorter section improves readability and supports the principles of plain English writing,

Another change was simplifying the language used throughout the content, complex or unnecessary words were removed and replaced with clear and direct expressions, This made the message easier to understand and more accessible to website visitors. Using simple language helps reduce confusion and improves communication with the audience. (Prof Briscoe Plain Language writing pdf slide 21)

Finally, the revised version was structured using the F pattern layout. The most important information was replaced at the beginning of the page, followed by supporting details. This change helps users quickly understand the purpose of the website and improves the overall user experiences.

  • Assignment#3 – Question 3

     3. For question #2, explain how your new post successfully addresses the three main objectives of Plain English writing as discussed in class. Provide a detailed breakdown of each objective. (9 Marks)

The revised introductory post successfully addresses the three main objectives of plain English writing: clarity, readability, and usability. These objectives were applied throughout the content to ensure that visitors can easily understand the message and interact with the website effectively.

The first objective is clarity. The content clearly explains what the business offers and how the services work. Simple and direct language was used to avoid confusion and ensure that readers can quickly understand the purpose of the website. Clear communication helps readers find the information they need without difficulty. (Prof. Briscoe, Plain Language Writing Tips pdf slide 9 )

The second objective is readability. The content uses short sentences, headings, and bullet points to make the information easier to read and scan. This structure allows visitors to quickly identify the important details without reading large blocks of text. Organising information in lists and sections improves readability and supports user understanding. (Prof Briscoe Writing Website Copy and Plain Language Writing pdf slide 27)

The third objective is usability. The content helps visitors take action by providing clear instructions, such as contacting the business or booking a session. Usability ensures that the language writing supports usability and by guiding readers toward the next step. (Prof Briscoe Plain Language Writing Pdf slide 41)

Overall, the revised post applies all three objectives to create content that is clear, organized and useful for website visitors.

     a. Describe one specific technique you used to improve readability in your revised version and explain why it is effective. (4 Marks)

One specific technique used to improve readability in the revised version was the use of bullet points to organize information. Bullet points were used to list photography services and key values, which makes the content easier to read and understand. Instead of presenting information in long paragraphs. Breaking it into smaller sections helps readers quickly scan the content and find important details.

This technique is effective because website users typically scan content rather than reading every word. Using lists helps present information clearly and reduces the effort required to understand the message. Organizing content into bullet points improves readability and supports better communication with visitors. (Prof Briscoe Plain Language Writing Pdf slide 35)

     b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)

The most challenging aspect of applying the F-pattern and plain English writing principles was organising the information in a way that was both clear and visually structured. It required careful planning to ensure that the most important information appeared at the top of the page and along the left side, while still maintaining a logical flow of content.

This challenge was overcome by reviewing the content and prioritizing key information before writing the final version. Headings and short paragraphs were used to guide readers through a page in a structured manner. This approach ensured that visitors could  quickly identify the main message and understand the services offered by the business. Following the F pattern structure helped improve the overall layout and readability of the website content.

  • Assignment #3 – Question 1

     1. We spoke about Plain English writing in class. Please answer the following in detail:

       a. How would you explain to someone what “Plain English writing” is? (4 Marks)

Plain English writing is a communication style that focuses on making information clear, simpler and easy to understand for the reader. Instead of using complicated vocabulary or long technical sentences, Plain English uses everyday language that most people can quickly read and understand. The main goal is not to sound overly theoretical, but to communicate in a direct and practical way.

In class, we discussed that plain english writing is about writing with the reader in mind. This means organizing information logically, choosing familiar words, and removing unnecessary complexity. It also involves presenting information in a way that helps readers find what they are looking for without confusion. Plain english writing does not mean removing important details. Instead, it means explaining those details clearly and efficiently.

Plain english writing is especially important for websites because users often scan content quickly rather than reading every word. If the writing is too complicated, users may leave the page or misunderstand the message. Clear communication helps build trust more and improves the overall user experience.

Overall, plain english writing can be described as writing that is clear, concise and focused on helping the reader understand information quickly and accurately.

     b. What makes plain English writing different? (4 Marks)

What makes plain English different is focus on clarity, simplicity, and reader understanding rather than complexity of formal language. Unlike traditional writing that may use long sentences, technical terms, or unnecessary details, plain english writing removes anything that does not help the reader understand the message. It prioritizes communication over style or sophistication. (Prof Briscoe, Plain language writing tips pdf , slide 9)

Another key difference is that plain english writing is designed specifically for the reaper. Writers are encouraged to think about what the audience needs to know and how they will use the information. This means using everyday words, writing in a logical order and making instructions or information easy to follow. For example, plain english writing often uses short sentences, lists and clear heading to improve readability and make content easier to scan. (Prof Briscoe, w8- writing website copy & plain language writing w26 pdf, slide 14)

Plain english writing is also different because it avoids unnecessary words and complicated expressions. Instead of trying to sound impressive, the goal is to communicate clearly and efficiently. This makes information easier to understand, reduces confusion and helps readers quickly find what they are looking for. Overall, plain english writing stands out because it focuses on making communication practical, direct and user friendly.

     c. What is plain language writing for the web and in detail and in your own words,       why is it important? (4 Marks)

Plain language writing for the web refers to creating website content that is clear, simple and easy for visitors to understand quickly. It focuses on delivering important information in a direct and organized way so that users can easily find what they need without confusion. Since people usually scan web pages instead of reading every word, web content must be written in a way that allows readers to understand the message immediately. (Prof Briscoe, W8-  writing website copy & plain language writing w26pdf, slide 12)

Plain writing for the web is important because online users have limited time and attention. If the content is too complex or difficult to understand, visitors may leave the website quickly. Clear and concise writing helps keep users engaged, improves their experience and supports the overall success of the website. Research discussed in class shows that people are more likely to understand and interact with content when it is written in plain english.(Prof Briscoe , w8- writing website copy & plain language writing)

For a business such as Lens Stories by P, plain language writing helps communicate services clearly to potential clients. It ensures that visitors understand what the business offers, how the services work and how they can contact the business.
